Larry Busdeker, Superintendent of the Hancock County Education Service Center, talks with Sheriff Michael Heldman about the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, why Sheriff Heldman started the program in the early 2000’s, and the positive impact this program has had on students in the county.
The School Resource Officer program was developed in conjunction with Sheriff Heldman’s Community Oriented Policing (COP) philosophy about building positive connections with students and law enforcement offers. Sheriff Heldman works directly with the schools to develop programs and find the right funding that works for each school’s unique needs. The safety of all residents of Hancock County, including students, has always been priority one for Sheriff Heldman. Re-elect Michael Heldman for Hancock County Sheriff on March 17, 2020. The theme of this year’s conference, Protecting the Unprotected, reflects our combined efforts to keep Ohio families and communities safe. The conference featured workshops such as Identifying and Protecting the Drug Endangered Child; The Rising Trend of Stimulant Misuse; Arrest, Search and Seizure; “Under the Armor” Law Enforcement, Secondary Trauma, and Building Resiliency; and the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program. At the Ohio Attorney General's Law Enforcement Conference, I had the honor of assisting Attorney General Dave Yost to present the memorial plaques to Westerville Police Department Chief Charles Chandler in memory of Westerville officers Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli. These courageous officers were fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence call on February 10, 2018. Bravery isn't the absence of fear, but acknowledging that fear and still doing what needs to be done. I am thankful every day for the brave men and women who serve our communities and promise to continue to do the best job possible to make sure they make it home to their families after every shift.
